Step Two: Downloading and Extracting WordPress
Get the latest download from http://www.wordpress.org
Next, we’ll download the latest version of WordPress. This will be a compressed file with an extension of .zip. This one file contains all the Wordpress files you’ll need. Download the lastest version here, and save this .zip file somewhere logical for you to find later.
Unzip the compressed WordPress files
Once the .zip file (a collection of files compressed into one for easy downloading) has been saved to your local computer, you need to extract the contents of the this file to your local machine. You do this by finding the WordPress .zip file you downloaded and right-clicking on it, then navigate the fly out menu and click on “compressed (zipped) Folders.
Now you will be asked to specify where the unzipped files should go. By default the Extraction Wizard will create a “wordpress” folder in the same directory where you saved the .zip file download. You can see by the path in the screen shot that mine is saved to a folder on my Desktop called “WP_Files”. Once you have decided on where to save the “wordpress” folder containing the unzipped files, you must now click the “Extract all files” link in the upper left corner underneath the heading “Folder Tasks”
You will now see the “Extraction Wizard” window, click “Next”.
Again, you will be asked where to save your “wordpress” folder containing the unzipped files. The location of this directory should be the same as in the above step. Click “Next”.
The files will then be extracted, or “unzipped” into the location you chose.
When the “Extraction Wizard” is done, simply click “Finish”.
